Archive sketches of my concepts for DUCTLINGS

I find sometimes my inspirations come from unusual ways. It could be while I am walking and observing my surroundings then something will catch my eye and spark a relationship to some problem I might have had and could be the solution to that problem, or I am browsing the net at other peoples activities and creations and again something is sparked or borrowed to integrate into my processes. A very good abstract example was inspired by something found when cleaning my room, believe it, a small piece of torn crumpled paper, this was rather unusual how it caught my eye and instantly formulated in my mind the concept, I will address this later in one of the displays.

On this page I placed a collection of details that have lead to the development of the Ductlings family.

With all this said here is a collection of my brain storm samples. Not all are per suited but some prove to be interesting. I am always thinking of ways to improve or find a solution to a problem. I have this sketch book with a collection of my ideas and in here I will place these new ideas before I forget them with what my mind is scurrying up at the time. I thought you might find them entertaining.

Dragon-Sleigh

This was one of the first concept craft derived from the LOCUS into the Dragon-Sleigh.   The resulting conclusion was to build a single seat ultra light. A static  model was created to see the workings. out of this a wing building process was developed with promising results. Also you get a glimpse of the model.

Dragon-Sleigh

With this sketch you can see a resemblance of a prehistoric creature emerging. That was the inspiration coming from the wing configuration.  A concept of using the common paper airplane inverted was utilized as a stabilizer replacing the uptight fin with the "V" shape now inherit to all the Ductlings.  This might have been borrowed from the Ductling when the V-Tail was conceived.

Dragon-Sleigh - X-DLB-0

The X-DLB-0 (eXperimental Ductling Lifting Body prototype 0) was developed as a small sport chaser type plane and built built a small model to test the flying characteristics. Several wing configurations where adapted and tested. This configuration worked best. I plan to develop this further with larger scale models.

Also a wingless version was developed the X-DLB-1

SeaHawk 2006

Here we can see the influence from experimenting with new shapes with the SeaHawk before the X-DLB-0 was conceived. this is one of those examples that suggest the ideas are not matured or just subconsciously evolving to what is yet emerging. Also sometimes a sketch is revisited and updated to facilitate the growth of a conception to maturity of a new concept.

The Dart

Was an attempt to address certain control surfaces and power plant I was working on. Eventually a prototype model was built but had not gone thru with completion to test flight. This was my insecure intension with using something new, Duct Fan system I have yet to cross this bridge.

What did come out of this was a system to utilized the Canard surfaces and blending them with the main wing control surfaces.

Dart power plant configuration

In July of 2006 I built this model and from these sketches a 3D model was created in interim to building the physical model to test my theories. As I mentioned this was not tested.

Dart Drone

In this version an attempt to incorporate the mono V-Tail and louvers canard system in the inlet. A bold idea, the concept was to give the craft a sensitive control on the up/down maneuverability combine with the vector trust controls at the exhaust tail controls for turning. This was conceived earlier in 2005.

A fan unit was to be mounted and i was trying to figure out the process.

Duct Canard

This was my concept to develop the "Uni-ducted V tail system. You can see the louver system.

This was my attempt to work out the controls for the louver.

VTOL option (swivel exaust)

An early attempt to understand and implement vertical takeoff. The louver system was use as part of the exhaust when deployed.

Guillotine Valve

One possible mechanism to switch from one source to the other. This was interesting possibility but very technical to achieve and was too large for the space constraint. You can see the the louver system was contributing to the configuration.

VTOL option (pivot fan unit)

A more recent development on the VTOL was to pivot the fan unit on an axis. This prove more possible with less interference in the process. A preliminary  3D model was built to investigate the possibilities. Size and material choice play a large part in making this work. A plausible theory.

Hidden control horns and links

Always looking at improving, this was a way to build micro links and hiding the horn. Could work with thicker trailing edges.

Swing wing and KF wing construction

One of the concepts is having a wing swing out to extent it using a worm drive system accompanied by a scissor lever system. Also was investigating ways to implement KF wings on the models.

Duct-Tail

With the latest version of the Ductling the exhaust control surfaces have changed and this sketch was for possibilities with control management. not much is detailed here but a mock up model was built to help with the investigation in the development.

?  no name

This was a thought in exercising the use of the duct-Tail vertically. Maybe it will be incorporated to the Kombat.

BRX000 the kite

Again one of my more innovating ideas I am looking at micro scale planes and the idea here was to build a small kite version using carbon fiber rods and Mylar film or 1mm DEPRON. This design is borrowed from an other project BRX000 (Buck Rogers Earth Reliance Fighter eXperimental 000)

Earth Reliance Fighter

From the Buck Rogers show I wanted to build this craft. This sketch was after some experimenting in the construction I modified the profile for my needs. The prototype static model plane was built and I intend to turn this onto a flying dream. From this the Cobra Strike was conceived.

Angel the kite

This was one original idea when I thought of building kites, what better then the Angel where it all stated for me. still working on this one.

Mystery wing

Here is the strangest concept that came to me in a form of a crumpled up piece of paper when cleaning my room. Only half of the wing was visible, but caught my eye was the folds and shape. I produce this a ten inch version and it flies.  Further development will continue on configuration to body and tail for bird like characteristics. This will be made fro single sheet of DEPRON.

Moth Man

This was inspired by a commercial I saw on TV.  A man step onto a pod like vehicle to fly to his destination.  My idea here is using the Ductling's lifting body concept and tightly fit a man like an exoskeleton jet pack to commute intercity as a quick way to get around.

Kite Nibiru

Looking at the micro kites this was possibly the first and common simplest to turn into a plane. the name Nibiru is the name of a mythical planet from the gods on a 3600 year orbit in our solar system as a brown dwarf. My understanding in astrology they are discovering that distant stars with possible life are compose of binary star systems. This would support the myth of Nibiru.
